I’d been terrified of the Reapers the first time they’d come over. I pulled up next to the bikes, careful to leave them plenty of room. Less than a minute to plan and I’d figured out a meal-might not be gourmet, but it wouldn’t embarrass Jeff either. I smiled, thankful something in my life was going right. I’d have to stay up late making another one but I could handle that. I even had a big potato salad all made up for the potluck after work tomorrow. Gabby had given me a watermelon she’d picked up in Hermiston that weekend. I’d planned on burgers, buns and chips for the two of us, but I always made extra, for leftovers. I’d already grabbed some beer and ground beef that’d been on sale. For a guy whose entire mission in life was to smoke pot and play video games, my brother Jeff had done a lot for me over the past three months. Jeff hadn’t given me any extra beer money and I didn’t want to ask him-not with his money troubles. It had already been a long day and the last thing I wanted to do was to run out and buy even more food, but the guys always wanted to eat. Good thing I’d stopped by the grocery store on the way home. Three Harleys and a big maroon truck I didn’t recognize. Crap, there were bikes outside the trailer.

It’s a totally lovable children’s book, good for middle-school, with a very likable heroine, who is trying her best to learn all about chickens, one chicken at a time.įor rural communities, this children’s book will be a hit. Overall, the book is just a good, light-weight, funny read. So how can I not love this children’s book? I certainly will recommend it to our school, since we have chickens at the school that the students care for. The zip code on the fictitious Animal Feed store is my zip code! And my town, and my school’s town (Petaluma) are known for raising chickens. To be honest, what immediately captured me was that it was practically set in my town. While the mix at sometimes is a little clumsy, over all it keeps the book from ever becoming dull, or totally superficial. This children’s book has a little bit of everything…multi-racial issues that a Mexican-American girl has to deal with chickens and everything you might want to know about raising them mystery – who is stealing the chickens and friendship… just to name a few. But if I’m going to live on a farm, I guess I might as well be a farmer…” “Mom says she has no intention of ever being a farmer, even though she knows how to drive a tractor and prune grapes. Mia dares to hope for a future without bloodshed, but the price of claiming it may be too much to pay. That’s where Scaeva, who wants Jonnen back, holds Mia’s mentor hostage. Pursued by assassins, towing her little brother Jonnen (Scaeva’s son) along, and aided by her loyal friends and her lover, Ashlinn, Mia crosses treacherous seas and a brutal wasteland to reach the place where her education in the fine art of death began: the Red Church. Mia thought she’d killed Consul Julius Scaeva, her power-hungry nemesis, but she was wrong. Fearless assassin Mia Corvere, a darkin who bends shadows to her will, continues to pursue vengeance against the man who destroyed her family in the gripping conclusion of Kristoff’s Nevernight Chronicles. I read the bird essay to the end, looking for the books to make an appearance (after all, this is a book about books - says so in the title), but to no avail. And really, before I can set forth about The Library, I must speak of the book which led to The Library, which is today's repast, Books In Black or Red by Edmund Lester Pearson.īlack or Red is a book of essays on books, book collectors, literary hoaxes, now forgotten classics, and one lone, strange chapter about a parrot. But as I mentioned in my previous post, my introduction to the books-about-books genre turned into a post in itself, and that The Library would have to wait for another day. I had originally intended to do a write up of The Library, by Andrew Lang, a book I'm currently enjoying. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. “ exquisitely crafted tale.Part epistolary romance, part mind-blowing science fiction adventure, this dazzling story unfolds bit by bit, revealing layers of meaning as it plays with cause and effect, wildly imaginative technologies, and increasingly intricate wordplay. This short novel warrants multiple readings to fully unlock its complexities.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review).įrom award-winning authors Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone comes an enthralling, romantic novel spanning time and space about two time-traveling rivals who fall in love and must change the past to ensure their future.Īmong the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. Her lover, Wick, is an ex-Company employee who makes biotech in his swimming pool laboratory. Our protagonist, Rachel, is a scavenger in the dangerous post-Company landscape. Only three named humans inhabit this world. There are artificial living creatures such as feral children with wings and poisoned claws, and transgenic species that can morph from human to bear. Diagnostic beetles can enter a human system and heal illnesses and wounds. These include humans, mutants, animals and hybrid creatures which are revealed to be failed or aborted biotech experiments. In a world laid waste by a biotech company called, simply, “Company”, Mord, a massive flying bear more than five storeys high, is terrorising survivors. So I knew I had to give it another chance. Then I saw many of my blogger buddies really enjoying this book. One, I was ridiculously behind on my review requests, two, I felt the beginning of My Familiar Stranger (from the sample chapters I got) was too slow. I actually turned down this review request the first time around. It is loved by fans of paranormal romance, fantasy romance, and urban fantasy. My Familiar Stranger is a full length, stand alone, Paranormal Romance novel that also sets up the foundation for the Black Swan series. Perhaps more importantly, in the midst of an epidemic of vampire related abductions, can she stay alive long enough to choose between an honor debt, true love, or the breathlessness of single-minded passion? Minutes ahead of inevitable assassination, Elora Laiken is forceably transported to an alternate dimension similar, but not identical, to her own. “Dangerous espionage, an unusual love story, and richly drawn background make this a book to capture quick and lasting interest. But just when Mara is ready to offer Sheftu her help and her heart, her duplicity is discovered, and a battle ensues in which both Mara’s life and the fate of Egypt are at stake. So, to barter for her freedom, she finds herself playing the dangerous role of double spy for two arch enemies-each of whom supports a contender for the throne of Egypt.Īgainst her will, Mara finds herself falling in love with one of her masters, the noble Sheftu, and she starts to believe in his plans of restoring Thutmose III to the throne. Mara is not like other slaves she can read and write, as well as speak the language of Babylonian. McGraw also has a perceptive insight into human nature, as is evident from the comment that everyone can. Mara is a proud and beautiful slave girl who yearns for freedom in ancient Egypt, under the rule of Queen Hatshepsut. The characterization is superb, both with respect to the protagonist Mara herself, as well as the sypathetic manner in which the Babylonian princess Inanni is portrayed, as a stranger in a strange land, and to whom Mara becomes a confidant. This compelling story of adventure, romance, and intrigue, set in ancient Egypt, was written by the three-time Newbery Honor and Edgar Award winning author Eloise Jarvis McGraw.
